CHAPTER NINE

Jordan was pulling me out of the bed a bit too early the next morning.

‘Get your lazy ass out of bed. We have to go into town. It’s movie night.’

I raised an eyebrow and grunted as I sat up.

‘What the hell is that?’

He smiled and turned to walk out, ‘Get dressed, and I will tell you over breakfast, babe.’

Movie night?

Oh no, I couldn’t wait to find out what the hell that was about.

I wore denim shorts and a t-shirt to match the sunny day, and when I bounded downstairs, I was met with a frown.

‘Change your fucking clothes.’

Jordan sat down and sipped his coffee moodily.

‘No.’

I sat down and he set his cup down with a dull thump.

‘Now, Maya!’

I wondered how far I could push him, and if this was because he is jealous, or just behaving like a protective uncle?’

‘This is my clothes. What’s wrong with it?’

His eyes held mine for a few moments, and I knew then, that it was jealousy.

‘I don’t want you advertising your body everywhere! Now change into something else!’

‘Fine.’

I returned to the room and slipped jeans on, and pulled my hair into a ponytail.

I regretted cutting my hair as time went on. There wasn’t much I could do with it at this length.

I thought of my cell phone then, and quickly retrieved it from the cupboard.

Jordan was still downstairs so I switched it on out of curiosity.

I practically had no use for it now that I was distracted.

15 missed calls and 7 unread messages.

Wow!

Cody was losing his mind, and it’s only been a couple of days.

That is excellent news!

‘Maya?’

I threw the phone into the cupboard and shuffled out the room.

Cody was suffering without a word from me, and that made me feel a whole lot better.

In my opinion, hell was too good for him.

‘A what?’

Jordan laughed, ‘A projector? You haven’t heard of one?’

I searched my memory and then thought of school.

‘Maybe I did, but what are you going to do with it?’

The wind ruffled Jordan’s dark hair, and I noticed that he looked very handsome in his blue t-shirt and low-cut denims.

(Yum, he was such eye candy)

‘There isn’t a cinema here. There never has been.’

I almost laughed, but I managed not to.

‘Oh, like a drive-in?’’

Jordan’s hand slipped over my thigh unconsciously as he explained, and that simple gesture made my heart thunder.

‘The community here is mostly rural, and the majority of them are middle-aged and above. This is their thing.’

I frowned.

(Why does he stay here?)

‘So at least once a month, Richard and I set a projector in the middle of the town square. They choose a movie, everybody eats and watches it together. They've been doing this since the sixties, according to Richard, and they never saw the need to change.’

That sounded quite nice.

‘Where are their children?’

The vehicle slowed as Jordan steered it into the parking bay just outside Presley’s.

‘They left for the cities to work, Maya. It is not something that can be helped.’

Wow, that was actually quite sad.

(I was glad that I didn’t laugh earlier.
